Youth Technology Lab

Our Youth Technology Lab consists of 15 individual workstations that are networked together in the standard "U" shape configuration. The computers all have Internet connectivity through the Fort Richardson's 59th Signal Battalion. Several firewalls are used by the 59th Signal Battalion to filter the Internet along with the Internet filter CYBERsitter. Each child must have a current parent permission form and completed a basic computer skills test before using the computers, and must also pass an Internet Safety test in order to access the Internet. Each computer station has headphones, a DVD/CD-ROM drive, a standard 3.5" floppy disc drive, and USB port compatibility for the purpose of connecting digital devices such as digital cameras, portable drives and card readers. We have a large, round 8 person table in the center of the lab for child initiated discussions and project construction. We provide a variety of options and opportunities for our children to explore various technologies (i.e. Lego Mindstorm Robotics, digital photography, and science kits). Also encouraged is exploring technology as a tool, a technique, and a cultural force. We have in-lab projects, field trips, and special guests to plant the seeds of imagination and creativity.
